Montessori is often pictured as a perfectly styled playroom. In reality it is a simple idea: help children do things for themselves. You can start today with what you already have.
1. Get everything to child height
Low shelves, a small hook for a jacket, a stool at the sink. When children can reach what they need, they ask for help less and try more.
2. Show fewer toys at a time
A crowded shelf is overwhelming. Display 6–8 toys and rotate them every couple of weeks. Old favourites suddenly feel new.
3. Choose natural materials
Wood feels warm, has weight and texture, and ages beautifully. It invites slow, focused play that flashing plastic rarely does. Look for water-based coatings and rounded edges.
4. Give movement a place
Montessori is hands-on, and movement is learning. A climbing triangle, balance board or rocker arch gives your child a daily way to practise balance and strength, even on a cold day.
5. Create a small place to sit and work
A child-sized chair at the right height makes drawing, snacks and puzzles more comfortable. Our Montessori chairs are designed exactly for this.
6. Let them join real life
Stirring, pouring, wiping the table, watering plants. Real tasks build confidence faster than pretend ones.
7. Keep it calm and beautiful
Soft colours, natural wood, and a clear place for everything. A calm space makes a calmer child, and a calmer parent.
Where to start
Pick one change this week. Many parents begin with something their child can climb or balance on, because it changes the whole feel of the room.
